Specific gravity is only relevant for liquids. It is the ratio of the mass of the material to the mass of an equal volume of water.The specific gravity of liquid water at 4C is 1.0 and its density is 1 kg/L. In many cases specific gravity for a liquid chemical or fertilizer will approximately equal 1. However, the liquid may be more or less dense than water. For example, 1 liter of 35% sulfuric acid weight 1.259 kg (denser than water), so its specific gravity is 1.259.
